How to Import Basmati Rice from India: Grades, Prices and Documents Explained

India's basmati advantage

India supplies around 70% of the world's basmati rice, exporting over 5 million tonnes annually to the Gulf, US, EU and Africa. Basmati is a GI-tagged product, and only rice grown in the Indo-Gangetic plains of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and western UP can legally be sold as basmati.

Choosing the right grade

1121 Steam and 1121 Golden Sella are the premium long-grain grades (average grain length 8.35mm) preferred in Gulf and US retail. 1509 Sella and Steam offer 85% of the eating quality at a sharper price, ideal for food service. Pusa Basmati Raw sits between the two. Traditional basmati (Taraori, Dehraduni) commands niche premium pricing in ethnic retail.

Current FOB price bands

Indicative FOB Mundra pricing: 1121 Steam $1,050 to $1,180 per MT, 1121 Golden Sella $1,120 to $1,250 per MT, 1509 Sella $850 to $950 per MT, and Pusa Raw $980 to $1,080 per MT. Prices move with the October to December harvest arrivals, so Q4 is usually the best contracting window.

Mandatory registrations and documents

Your exporter must hold APEDA RCMC (basmati is a scheduled product), FSSAI Central License and IEC. Each shipment needs a certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate, fumigation certificate, packing list, and a COA covering moisture (under 13%), broken percentage, foreign matter and pesticide residues. EU buyers should insist on a full EU MRL pesticide panel.

Packaging and logistics

Standard export packing is 25kg or 50kg PP bags, with 5kg and 10kg retail pouches available for private label. A 20ft container takes roughly 25 to 26 MT of bagged rice. Nhava Sheva and Mundra are the principal loading ports for Gulf and EU lanes.
